Speedway Heavy Trash Drop Off/Recycle Day at the Brickyard on October 11, was a huge success.  Solid Waste Commissioners Ed Stresino, Christie Manion, Sandy Elwanger, Pam Flaherty and Wanda Smith would all like to thank everyone who volunteered services or their time.  It was a very successful day.

First, we must thank the Indianapolis Motor Speedway for providing the 16th parking lot to hold the event.  This allowed Wendell Walters, Super Street Department head,   and the Commission to have a huge layout of trucks and roll-offs with room to spare for drop off vehicles.  Relay For Life Speedway, 2009, provided pick up service for residents who couldn’t get their items to the drop off location.  Relay raised almost $800 for next year and have graciously committed to participating in the spring!

Kudos to all the recyclers who participated, Asset Recycling, ApplianceUSA, Wen Tian Plastics, Grooms Tires, Goldsmith Group, Smock Fansler and Goodwill, who all left with one or more semi’s full of items that didn’t have to go into the landfill.

Special thanks to Wendell and his crew, Don Hickrod and Scott Stephens.  Don and Scott ran the front loaders for over 7 hours, loading and moving our trash around the parking lot.

Thank you to Coke for providing the wonderful banners and many many thanks to Chris Hill at Dawson’s on Main for providing lunch for the workers.  Barbara Lawrence brought coffee and rolls for breakfast.  Barbara and Christie Manion brought water and ice to keep workers cooled down.

Last, but not least, the Commission would like to thank Shane Clampitt and the Jr. High Boys Football Team for providing much needed manpower at the drop off site.  Many boys also jumped into the Relay For Life vehicles to help with pick ups.

Thanks also to the adult volunteers who helped save items from the landfill, including Jeff Hartman, Gary Raihkes, Bree Martin, Karen Gosnell, Jenny Browning, Bud Ellwanger,  Wendy Goss, Eileen Fisher, and Joyce Clouse.  If we’ve missed your name, please forgive us…it was a busy day!

Speedway Solid Waste Management Commission is happy to announce that we hit our goal of reducing what we put in the landfill by 50%.  We look forward to serving you again in the spring.

Speedway Recycles---Trash to Treasure coming to Speedway Cable Access

Working with Bill Pea and Steve Arisman from Speedway Cable Access, Christie Manion has completed taping for the first in a series of repurposing shows, teaching ways to recycle and repurpose items that might ordinarily be thrown out.  Speedway Recycles---Trash to Treasure will have a new episode monthly, showcasing some of the projects that Christie has completed during her years as a repurposer.

She will walk through a project step-by-step from start to finish, using items such as drawers, scrap wood, cans and other miscellaneous household items, to create a new, usable item for a new generation of use.  Christie will also be posting instructions on her website at www.maniondesigns.com.   Please watch this site for more information!
